Lamprey River Splash & Dash

Kayakers and Canoeists, young and old, expert and beginner, are invited to paddle in the Newmarket Recreation’s 2nd Annual Lamprey River Splash & Dash “Its a Jungle out There” Themed Paddle Palooza Parade held on Saturday, August 19, 2017 at the beautiful downtown Schanda Park on the Lamprey River.

This new annual tradition draws spectators by land and sea to the downtown area to watch competitors participate in our “costume themed” paddle palooza parade and the 3K & ½ K kayak/canoe races down the Lamprey River.

Each year there will be a new and creative theme for the paddle palooza parade portion of the event which will serve as the inspiration for the participants to dress and decorate their paddle craft in order to compete for the best-dressed prize.

This year’s theme – “Its a Jungle out There” Paddle Palooza Parade will take place at noon and is open to all ages and consists of a short paddle around the cove in a parade formation dressed and decorated in your best Jungle paraphernalia for the this crazy theme.  The 3K race will begin immediately following parade and the course will go to the mouth of Great Bay and back.  For the younger or less experienced paddler there will be a junior ½K Race as well.  This shortened race will consist of a short race to just around the bend of the river and back.  The finish line for all races will be marked in the Lamprey River cove in front of the mills.  Cash Prizes and Medals will be awarded to winners in all categories.

Both the parade and race will commence at Newmarket’s beautiful Schanda Park which is located at the end of Water Street along the Lamprey River.  There will be no parking at Schanda Park.  Vehicles can drop off paddle craft at the park and then park car at Newmarket Junior/Senior High School.  A shuttle will be available from 10:30am – 4pm to transport participants and spectators to and from the down town area.

It should be noted that this is still a brand new community event as well as a fundraiser for the Newmarket Recreation Department.  It is being brought to Town of Newmarket in part by a grant received from the Lamprey River Advisory Committee.  In addition to the grant there are many other collaborators and sponsors on board to join in the fun of putting on this event.  Our sponsors include: 7 Rivers Paddling of Newmarket, The Newmarket Business Association, and The Newmarket Conservation Commission.

It is our hope that this event will be a family friendly event for the entire Newmarket Community. There are several categories based on age and type of paddle water craft used for both the paddle parade and 3K and ½ K boat races they advise you to log onto the website and read all the details and rules for the event online.
